Governments, corporations and voluntary initiatives currently use a number of approaches to account for organization- and project-level greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) identified the need to standardize aspects of GHG accounting and verification and came up with ISO-14064.

What are the Benefits?

ISO- 14064 was introduced to support the credibility, comparability and environmental integrity of existing and emerging regulatory (international, regional, national) and voluntary GHG schemes.

The benefits of the ISO-14064 certification are:

• Enhance environmental integrity by promoting consistency, transparency and credibility in GHG quantification, monitoring, reporting and verification;

• Enable organizations to identify and manage GHG-related liabilities, assets and risks through the systematic development and maintenance of GHG inventories;
• Support the design, development and implementation of comparable and consistent GHG schemes or programs.

ISO 14064 GHG Assertions Program

ISO 14064comprises three standards, respectively detailing specifications and guidance for the organizational and project levels, and for validation and verification:

• The first part ISO-14064-1 specifies requirements for designing and developing organization or entity-level GHG inventories.

• The second part ISO-14064-II details requirements for quantifying, monitoring and reporting emission reductions and removal enhancements from GHG projects.
• The third part 1SO-14064-III provides requirements and guidance for the conducting of GHG information validation and verification.

They can be used independently, or as an integrated set of tools to meet the varied needs of GHG accounting and verification.
